                               SDA Open 2022

After consultation with the WDF the 2022 Darts Corner Scottish Open will now take place at the Normandy Cosmopolitan Hotel, Inchinnan Road, Renfrew from Friday 22^nd April to Sunday 24^th April 2022. 
This is a WDF Gold event for both men and ladies. This event is open to all players who are eligible to play in the World Masters and the World Professional Championships and carries a place at Lakeside for both champions. The Scottish Darts Association are inviting players to enter the annual Scottish darts-fest that is the Scottish Open.  This is one of the hardest open tournaments to win as illustrated by the history of the event showing only two players that have ever won the men’s title twice, Robbie Green, in 2011 and 2014 and Wesley Harms who won in 2013 and 2019. 

Will there be another Scottish winner to follow in the footsteps of Peter Johnstone (1998), Mike Veitch (2004), Gary Anderson (2007) and Cameron Menzies (2017)? 

The Scottish Open was first contested in 1983, held on the same weekend as the World Cup in Edinburgh and was won by 23 year old Australian star Russell Stewart who defeated his fellow Australian Terry O’Dea in the final.  The ladies title went to Pat Connaughton from England who defeated Welsh ladies team captain Sandra Lee in the final. 

The tournament was then moth-balled for twelve years and revived in 1995 when England’s Chris Mason took the title along with ladies singles champion Deta Hedman, who currently leads the way in the Ladies Open with five titles. Others to watch out for include Anastasia Dobromyslova with four wins and Lorraine Winstanley with three titles.  Ann Kirk has been Scotland’s sole victor in the Ladies event winning twice in1996 and 1999. Fallon Sherrock has been in five out of the last six ladies finals and finally took her maiden SDA Open title in 2017. 

This year’s event will kick off on the Friday night with the traditional ice-breaker tournament, the Mixed Triples, followed by two sessions of Singles play on the Saturday and finishing on the Sunday with the Open Doubles competitions. The Mens winner will take away £3000 while the Ladies champion wins £1500 and of course valuable ranking points can be accrued to take into the Ranking Tables. The current champions are Jim Williams from Wales and England’s Beau Greaves.  Winning duo in the mens pairs were Scottish duo Cameron Menzies & Ryan Hogarth, the first time an all-Scottish pair had won the title while the ladies champions were Deta Hedman and Beau Greaves, who successfully defended their 2019 title, also giving Deta three in a row.

The Friday night triples competition was won by the Cleveland trio of Carla Boyes, Cameron Anderson and Simon McKenner, calling themselves Stampers Crew. Online entries will be accepted by the end of February on the SDA website and full entry details and accommodation offers will be available, please check in regularly. For special accommodation rates please phone the Normandy Hotel and remember to mention it’s for the darts weekend.

SDA International Squad 2022

The Scottish Darts Association announced its pool of players for the upcoming Internationals to be played in Wales in May and have included eight new caps and one recalled player. 

The ladies' pool was well reflected in the SDA Women's Tour event last weekend where all four of the semi-finalists were selected to represent Scotland. 

Existing squad members Lorraine Hyde (Ayrshire), Emily Davidson (Grampian), Susanna McGimpsey (Greater Glasgow) and new cap Louise Paterson (Grampian). 

They will be joined by Lynsey Ward (Renfrewshire), Chloe O’Brien (Angus), who makes the step up from the Youth squad and the third new cap Courtney McBain (Highland) who is currently third in the averages. 

Fife’s Alan Small has been named as the new Scotland captain and he will lead out a squad of five new caps, one recall and six current pool members. 

Grampian provide seven of the players, Scott Robertson, Matthew Goldie, Bruce Montgomery, Scott Campbell, Jamie Bain, and two new caps,  Sean Ryan and Danny Trueman who recently became the first player in the new SDA County set-up to hit a 100+ average for his county match. 

Whilst Dean Carr from Fife and Andy Callary from Greater Glasgow, William Kirkwood from East Stirlingshire are the final three new selections. 

They are all joined by existing pool members, Colin Miller (Fife) and Euan Callander (Angus).

SDA Tour One Report 

A brand new SDA tournament started this week with the SDA Men's and Ladies Singles Tour opening event being presented at the CISWO Club, Glenrothes. 

Celebrating his selection in the International squad for the first time Grampian’s Danny Trueman took the inaugural event with a 6-3 victory over a fellow International player, Euan Callander from Angus. 

Both players saved their top averages for the final with Danny firing in a three dart 84.68 and Euan notching 85.12. In the semi-finals, Euan took out Colin Hepplewhite from Fife by the odd leg in eleven whilst Danny gained his spot in the final with a 6-2 win over Tay Valley’s Glen Parsons Making up the last eight in this event were Mark Barilli, Alan Small, Steve Buchan and Scott Winder.

The ladies' winner was Scotland No1 Lorraine Hyde from Ayrshire who took the final 5-0 against Susanna McGimpsey from Greater Glasgow. In the semi-finals, Lorraine defeated Grampian’s Emily Davidson, 4-3 while Susanna had a straight legs victory over Louise Paterson from Grampian.

In the ladies' competition, the losing quarter-finalists were Kelly McKinnon, Chloe O’Brien, Lorraine Green and Debbie McBride. 

The valuable ranking points gained at the weekend will be taken to the second event in the series of four on Sunday 3rd July at Bannockburn.

An overall prize fund of £11,000 has been allocated to the Singles Tour and is open to all members of the SDA and also to players who wish to register for the tour events if they are not represented by a Scottish area.2022 Event 1

Darts Corner SDA County Darts Championship – 26th February 2022 

After the latest round of Darts Corner Scottish County Championship matches Grampian are streets ahead of the opposition in the North and are basically unstoppable, while the South table is headed by Renfrewshire, but only eight points separate all four teams in this section.

Also, it should be remembered that the South section has incomplete and postponed matches to be taken into consideration so this one will go all the way down to the wire.

 Highland v Grampian 7-17 (4-12, 3-5)

Grampian continued their domination of Scotland North with victories in both the men’s and ladies matches.  The top set in the men’s match came from Derek Maclean (Highland) with a 4-1 win averaging 87.87 while tops for Grampian was Stephen Michie with a 86.08 average.  Derek’s average turned out to be the best winning set of the weekend’s darts. 

Grampian’s international player Emily Davidson had the best ladies match of the day with 73.14, also the top set in the weekend’s darts, whilst Highland’s Olive Byamukama hit a 60.93 average. 

This was a top-quality match with 21 maximums and five ton-plus checkouts with Grampian recording the second best men’s team average in Scotland to date, 75.88 and they already lead the way with 77.24. 

Moray v Fife 9-15 (5-11, 4-4)

Fife was victorious in the men’s match whilst the ladies fought out an excellent draw. 

Fife’s Colin Miller had an average of 80.16 which just pipped the best from Moray through Iain Campbell with 78.77. 

The top lady player was Mandy Brown from Moray with 56.36 while Steph Gilmour hit a 51.83 average for Fife. 

Tay Valley v Angus 9-15 (6-10, 3-5)

The visitors returned to Angus with all the points winning both men's and ladies' matches. 

Euan Callander had the top men’s set with 81.24 and the best for Tay Valley came from Dean McGlone with 78.47. 

In the ladies' match, the award went to Angus again as Kerry Soutar notched a 56.61 average as compared to 44.64 from Tay Valley’s Jenny Peddie. 

Renfrewshire v Greater Glasgow 12-12 (6-10, 6-2)

Honours were shared here with the visitors winning the men’s match while the visitors were triumphant in the ladies match, resulting in a 12-12 draw overall. 

David Burt had a 4-0 win with an 82.36 average to take the top set while best for Greater Glasgow came from Andy Callary with 80.16. 

Renfrewshire’s Tammy Jo Grafton took the ladies award with a 62.63 average and tops for Greater Glasgow was June McCallum, 42.75. 

Ayrshire v East Stirlingshire 15-9 (8-8, 7-1)

A superb men’s match saw both teams having to settle for an 8-8 draw whilst Ayrshire romped home 7-1 in the ladies match giving them the overall victory. 

East Stirlingshire’s Davy Burt had Scotland South’s best set of the weekend with an 85.89 average and the top set in the home side came from John Miller with 74.55. 

The Ladies match also supplied the top set in Scotland South as Ayrshire’s Lorraine Hyde won a 3-0 match, averaging 72.73. The best for East Stirlingshire came from Irene McInnes with a 42.54 average. 

In the North, Grampian lead all three leagues with big leads in all three and look odds on to do the clean sweep. 

In the South its more of an open book with Renfrewshire leading overall and a point clear in the ladies table but its East Stirlingshire top of the mens table, again by just a point.

Looking to the future is how the Scottish Darts Association describes the announcement of the next element in the complicated jigsaw that hopefully will see the SDA emerge from the ravages of the Covid pandemic.
The SDA Men's and Ladies Singles Tour will include four events and a finals day which will offer a total of £11,000 prizemoney to all competitors.
Confirmation of dates and venues for the opening two events means that the cream of Scottish darts talent will be heading to Glenrothes on Saturday 5th March Players to register at 11.00 am for noon start followed by a trip to Bannockburn on Sunday 3rd July. 

Each event is worth a total of £2000 with an extra £3000 set aside for the finals day.
This leaves the two final events which could be held in your area if possible.  Anyone who thinks they could host an event should contact General Secretary Cliff Murray at the SDA for further details. The basic cost of holding an event is £500 plus £10 per dartboard used, nominally eight boards.  In order to ensure the future of International darts for the SDA it is imperative that all the darts membership throughout Scotland get behind the Association as it moves forward and if your Area could be a host organisation this would go a long way towards that goal. 

The SDA has now managed to get the new and rejuvenated Darts Corner Inter-County Championship up and running, the introduction of the Darts Tour is a welcome addition to the calendar, the Mega Weekend originally set for April 22nd/24th, has now been moved to October and replaced by the Scottish Open at the Normandy, and an 18-30 Youth Tour is imminent and currently, the SDA is working hard on an Individual membership scheme. 

All these innovations could help to get the SDA back into its usual role of providing opportunities for Scottish darts players to compete at all levels.  The response from the Area organisations has never been more important, basically, all dart players must do their part in ensuring the survival of the SDA and keeping the saltire flying at events all around the world.
